If you or your child has autism, some of the most basic things you can study and learn are your rights. Every American citizen is protected under the constitution, and there are special laws that have been passed to help protect people with autism and other disabilities. By knowing the laws that protect you or your autistic loved ones, you can live in a world that provides better opportunities to everyone, regardless of not only disability, but also race, gender, and ethnicity. This is simply the first step to creating a more tolerant world in general.

The first law with which you should become acquainted is I.D.E.A., or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The I.D.E.A. covers children ages 3 to 21 and provides autistic children with the special educational programs they need. The I.D.E.A. gives parents the right to be involved with education decisions concerning their child made by the school. Your child first needs to be assessed to qualify under the I.D.E.A., and this is best done by a private professional. In the end, your child has the right by law to receive a free public education that is appropriate for his or her skill level. If your public school has no such program, they are required to find one or create one at no cost to you.

Also become familiar with and knowledgeable about the American Disabilities Act. Under this act, discrimination due to disability is prohibited in the workforce, as well as with state and local government, public accommodations, the United States Congress, public transportation, and telecommunications. For example, if you are autistic, but have the skills to do a certain job, you cannot be refused the job because of your autism.

Other laws provide rights for people with autism so that they are constitutionally equal to others. One such law says that people with autism have the right to vote, and accommodations must be made so that this is possible. Another says that autistic individuals cannot be refused housing based on disability. Others provide equal rights in all other aspects of life, and these should especially be studied if your loved one with autism is in a health care institution.

By knowing the law and how it applies to yourself or others with autism, you can be sure that justice is upheld. If you have questions, local law officials should be ready and willing to answer you or provide you with material to answer your own questions. Remember that ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse for anyone, so be an advocate for yourself or others with autism to prevent mistreatment.

The colon is a very important organ that performs a very vital function in the human body. The colon is responsible for eliminating a large bulk of wastes formed from the digestive process, and is sort of the sewerage system in a person. It is thus important to maintain the health of the colon because improperly functioning bowels can cause disastrous problems in the body. Knowing about diseases that the colon may acquire can help in keeping one’s colon health in check.

Colon disease vary in their gravity, some may just be mild irritation while others can be a threat to life. The four most common kinds of colon disease include non-cancerous polyps, ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease and Crohn’s disease.

Polyps

Colon polyps are basically abnormal growths of tissue that appear in the lining of the colon, protruding into intestine’s canal. While polyps are normally not serious, they can develop cancer cells later if not detected early. There are three subtypes of polyps and polyp-related diseases: ordinary polyps, familial adenomatous polposis, and Lynch Syndrome.

Ordinary polyps occur sporadically among people aged 40 to 60. These polyps may progress into cancer within ten years, and thus they are often removed with colonoscopy. Familial adenomatous polyposis or FAP is a hereditary disease that is characterized by the occurrence polyps in the colon by the hundreds or even thousands, with great chances of developing cancer and thus treatment entails removal of the colon. Lynch Syndrome is another hereditary condition that is more common than FAP, although less common than ordinary polyps, and unlike FAP, which occurs as early as age ten, Lynch Syndrome usually appears as late as the 40s or as early as the 20s.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is characterized by the inflammation in the mucosa, the deepest lining of the colon or rectum. Ulcers or small open sores would form on the lining’s surface, producing blood, pus and mucus. Around 500,000 to about two million people in America suffer this disease and most of the patients are below the age 30.

Ulcerative Colitis usually manifests with abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, constipation, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue, fevers, or weight loss. Patients who experience excessive bleeding may also develop anemia and malnutrition, especially for children. The symptoms of this disease can disappear and reappear within months or years.

Diverticular Disease

Some people develop pockets in the walls of their colon, these pockets are called dierticula and their presence is what doctors refer to as diverticulosis while their inflammation is called diverticulitis. Complications can happen when infection reaches diverticula. The pockets may rupture causing bowel blockage or leaking of the bowel wall. Another great danger is the introduction of harmful bacteria causing abscesses and even small tears in the colon walls that could lead to life threatening abscesses in the abdomen.

Many people who have diverticular disease may not know about it because diverticulosis usually do not have symptoms. At most, people have mild cramps, constipation and bloating. Diverticulitis on the other hand manifests with abdominal pain, soreness around the lower left side of the abdomen, fever, vomiting, nausea, chills, and cramping. The gravity of these symptoms greatly depends on the extent of complications and infection.

Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s disease, which is also known as enteritis or ileitis, is a digestive tract disease characterized by the chronic inflammation of the colon and other parts of the digestive tract. It affects about 500,000 to two million Americans and can recur over a patient’s lifetime. Oftentimes, Crohn’s Disease is hard to detect because it has similar symptoms to other colon disorders like ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

The usual symptoms of Crohn’s disease are abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, anal pain, bloating, anal drainage, rectal abscesses, joint pain, skin lesions and fissure. Some patients bleed to the extent of developing anemia. Crohn’s disease may stunt the growth and development of children due to the malabsorption of protein and other important nutrients.

Crohn’s disease may sometimes result into ulcers that could tunnel to surrounding tissues and areas such as the vagina, and bladder. Fistulas, or abnormal tunnels, may also result from Crohn’s disease.

Knowing about colon diseases is just a small part of keeping one’s digestive health on the right track. Regular checkups for colon disease or other illnesses are necessary to ensure good health and general well being.

Acne is the most common of all skin disorders. And acne has some types. It is about eighty percent of all people between the ages of twelve and twenty-four suffer some types of acne. It is a problem of the oil glands in the skin. In contrast to several conservative conceptions, it is a problem experienced not absolutely by teenagers. A number of people are overwhelmed their whole lives with endless outbreaks of acne.

There are various types of Acne. The most general type is Acne Vulgaris which is well-known as Acne Simplex too. Other types of Acne except Vulgaris are Cosmetica, Excriee, Cystic and Occupational Acne.

However, many other types of acne exist. Informations in relation to 5 types cited above are:

ACNE VULGARIS: This acne type is a chronic inflammatory condition wherein surplus fluid is formed by over-active oil and sweat glands. Hair follicles become congested with this surplus fluid which is incapable to run away. The trapped sebum could later lead to bacterial inflammation in and around the hair follicle. This type of Acne typically starts at puberty and comes out principally on the face as pimples, cysts and blackheads.

ACNE COSMETICA: it is caused by topical make-up. Typified by small pink bumps, acne cosmetica is typically somewhat mild, with little possibility of scarring. The protracted usage of cosmetics, particularly those including isopropyl myristate and greasy ingredients for example lanolin, may be responsible for this type of Acne. It has been advocated that around 25% of women have this type of Acne, the majority of who contain a history of heavy make-up use. The management is uncomplicated. Find out which cosmetic is leading to the Acne and end applying it.

ACNE EXCORIEE: This is one of acne types that typically discovered in young girls, beginning in adolescence. The girl might discover a pimple and begin scratching at it cruelly. The skin is injured by the fingernails and is not able to cure because of constant scratching, which leaves a broad, superficial scar. This must not be confused with an oblivious nervous practice. In this situation, minimal acne lesions on the face are worsened by neurotic pressing and squeezing of the pimples, trying to clear the contents with the fingers. Consequently, hyperpigmentation and stellate constricted scars take place, while frequently the original underlying acne has cured.

CYSTIC ACNE: One of the most ruthless types of acne, it arises when the infected contents of a pustule or pimple erupts under the skin, rather than on the surface. The body’s natural protections afterward attempt to combat the infection, causing swelling and pain. Cystic acne frequently leads to facial scarring. This type of Acne typically involves the back, upper arms, shoulders and neck. Cystic Acne frequently comes about in males and usually perseveres beyond 20 years of age and can cause enduring scarring. This type of Acne could be medically dealt with and needs specialist recommendation. In some situations it may be rather painful and can effect in the patient feeling unwell.

OCCUPATIONAL ACNE: This is one of acne types which typically shape as the effect of touch with mineral oil or petroleum. This acne type is a general condition had by motor mechanics that are often uncovered to oils and grease. The oil annoys the hair follicles leading to blackheads to shape profoundly in the skin and is hard to treat. Get in touch with the oil must be reduced or eliminated.

Drinking herbal tea is on one of the easiest and safest way to keep our body healthy. Most people would rather drink medicine or supplement to make them feel better, but herbal tea is a lot better.

Guava fruit today is considered minor in terms of commercial world trade but is widely grown in the tropics, enriching the diet of hundreds of millions of people in the tropics of the world. Guava has spread widely throughout the tropics because it thrives in a variety of soils, propagates easily, and bears fruit relatively quickly. The fruits contain numerous seeds that can produce a mature fruit-bearing plant within four years. In the Guava is known for being one of the most popular therapeutic plants in the Philippines. It is used as an antiseptic, astringent and anthelminthic, and kills bacteria, fungi, and ameba. The fresh leaves of the plant are used to facilitate the healing of wounds and cuts and are also very effective for toothaches.

Consumers are aware of the term `antioxidant’ — they know they’re important, they know that they’re good for you and they know that you should eat foods that have more of them,” says Ilene Smith, vice president and director of nutrition marketing for Ketchum, a public relations firm whose clients include California strawberry and almond growers.

The super-food reputation of the above-mentioned fruits and vegetables is based largely on their prodigious antioxidant activity.

Green tea medicine has shown to have even more health benefits than guava herbal medicine, and this is largely due to the catechins that are found in green tea. These catechins, otherwise known as polyphenols, have been shown in recent studies to fight viruses, slow aging, and have a beneficial effect on health in general. Green tea helps to reduce high blood pressure, lower blood sugar, and even fight cancer.

Herbal medicines are extracts from plants and flowers that are used to treat and prevent illness, and they have been used for a wide range of different conditions, including headaches, depression, PMS, and insomnia. Just make sure to remember that herbal medicine, although natural and basically completely safe, is still a form of medicine and so you have to use it with caution and follow recommended dosage instructions.

Unfortunately, guavas aren’t popular in North America, except among immigrants. If you find them in a grocery store, it’s probably an ethnic one, a Chinese or Indian store where you might find them labeled as “Gwawas.”

Guava is successfully grown under tropical and subtropical climate. The quality of the fruits is better in areas having distinct winters therefore guava grown near Allahabad is famous for the best quality fruits. Although guava tolerates drought, protective irrigation facilities are required. It grows best with an annual rainfall around 1000 mm restricted between June and September.

Diarrhea and Dysentery: Guava is very rich in astringents (compounds those make your gums feel tighter and fresh after you chew guava leaves or eat a raw guava or use some toothpaste) which binds up loose bowels in diarrhea. These astringents are alkaline in nature and have disinfectant and anti-bacterial properties, thus help cure dysentery by inhibiting microbial growth and removing extra mucus from the intestines. Further, other nutrients in guava, such as vitamin-C, Carotenoids and potassium strengthens and tones up the digestive system and disinfect it. Guava is also beneficial in gastroenteritis due to reasons stated above.

Reverse Mortgage for senior continue to grow in popularity among seniors, primarily due to rising cost of living. Researchers seek to uncover the national view on reverse mortgage, to determined how effective a reverse mortgage can be in financially assisting seniors in their retirement years.

According to a research conducted by the National Council on Aging, approximately 97% of the population aged 65 and beyond desire to remain independent in their home after retirement. This continues to be the biggest concern for this age group in planning for retirement.

The thought of independence is at the very core of what this country was established upon, and is woven into the fabric of the American society. However, with the cost of living soaring to record heights, independence for many seniors may not be an option, unless they are able to unlock the financial power in their homes through a reverse mortgage.

Lets take a closer look.

To some the thought of independence after retirement is a lofty goal, while for the overwhelming majority, being independent is the only way that they want to go on living.

The first step to determining if you will able to make this latter dream a reality is to determined if your current expenses fall within your monthly or annual budget.

Next determine a comfortable amount that you will be able to set aside for unexpected financial burdens which may arise.

Here are a list of possible occurrences that will require monetary attention:

Health problems

Medicare co-payments

Prescription drugs

Hiring a caretaker

Car issues

Home improvement needs

Just to name a few.

While there are many services who specialize in catering to seniors to make their dream of independence after retirement a reality, these services in most cases require a financial commitment, adding even more strain on seniors finances.

A reverse mortgage could prove to be the best solution for seniors who have plenty of equity in their homes and little savings to handle their day to day living expenses. Since a reverse mortgage does not require any monthly payments, the money which seniors receive does not create any new financial obligations.

With the use of a reverse mortgage seniors may have the financial power to remain independent in their homes while enjoying their retirement years.

Seniors should seek out professional advice from a reverse mortgage expert, who can give them all the information about reverse mortgages to help them make the most effective and informed decision. A reverse mortgage can prove to be the added financial resource to give seniors the sense of freedom from the financial woes which accompany so many people today.

This supplement formula is designed to target common heart problems. Recovery and prevention are addressed with known antioxidants. All-natural ingredients have been included to provide effective support; for example, hawthorn, which improves coronary artery blood flow and strengthens of the contractions of the heart muscle; and garlic, which has been proven to lower atherosclerosis and also helps to lower cholesterol levels and excessive platelet adhesion.

Heart disease(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Heart-Disease.html) is a wide-encompassing category that includes all conditions that affect the heart and the blood vessels. Until age 50, men are at greater risk than women of developing heart disease, though once a woman enters menopause, her risk triples.

Many people with cardiovascular disease have elevated or high cholesterol levels. Low HDL cholesterol (known as the “good” cholesterol) and high LDL cholesterol (known as the “bad” cholesterol) are more specifically linked to cardiovascular disease than is total cholesterol.3 A blood test, administered by most healthcare professionals, is used to determine cholesterol levels.

Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) of the vessels that supply the heart with blood is the most common cause of heart attacks. Atherosclerosis and high cholesterol usually occur together, though cholesterol levels can change quickly and atherosclerosis generally takes decades to develop.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and the risk increases as blood pressure rises. Glucose intolerance and diabetes constitute separate risk factors for heart disease. Smoking increases the risk of heart disease caused by hypertension.

Abdominal fat, or a “beer belly,” versus fat that accumulates on the hips, is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack. Overweight individuals are more likely to have additional risk factors related to heart disease, specifically hypertension, high blood sugar levels, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and diabetes.

What are the symptoms of Heart Disease(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Heart-Disease.html)?

People with heart disease(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Heart-Disease.html) may not have any symptoms at all. If symptoms are present, they may include difficulty in breathing during exertion as well as when lying down; fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting, depression, memory problems, confusion, frequent waking during sleep, chest pain, an awareness of the heartbeat, sensations of fluttering or pounding in the chest, swelling around the ankles, or a large abdomen.

Main Function

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Many risk factors are associated with heart disease; most can be managed, but some cannot. Many people with heart disease have elevated cholesterol levels or high blood pressure. Atherosclerosis of the vessels that supply the heart with blood is the most common cause of heart attacks. Atherosclerosis and high cholesterol usually occur together, though cholesterol levels can change quickly and atherosclerosis generally takes decades to develop. Garlic has been proven to lower atherosclerosis and it also helps to lower cholesterol levels and excessive platelet adhesion. CoQ10 is an antioxidant that has been shown to support heart health as well as lower blood pressure.

Ingredients Description

Garlic has been proven to lower atherosclerosis as well as lower cholesterol levels and excessive platelet adhesion. Magnesium may regulate heart rhythm and reduce blood clots. CoQ10 is an antioxidant that has been shown to support heart health and lower blood pressure. The Vitamin B Complex promotes energy metabolism. Cayenne increases blood circulation. N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, L-Glutathione Reduced, Vitamin C and Selenium work together in absorbing free radicals from the system. Hawthorn is beneficial for the heart system.

Your heart, other than your brain, is the center of many body processes especially that it pumps the river of your life, your blood. When not taken care properly, you may contact or acquire a heart disease that could be a threat to your life.

What is heart disease?

Heart disease , also known as cardiovascular disease, is an umbrella term used to describe other ailments that affect the busiest muscle in the body, the heart. Mainly, it affects older people and is hereditary in nature. Heart diseases have become one of the major causes of deaths all over the world. Many of the variants of the disease are considered as “silent killers because they show no visible symptoms especially those that are affected with high blood pressure.

Heart disease s are closely associated with blood pressure, cholesterol, hardening of the arteries, heart attacks and strokes. The disease occurs when the heart and vessels of the blood are not working properly or are malfunctioning because of other factors like too much cholesterol, fatigue and improper diets.

Other Problems Related to Heart Disease

Many of the problems that go along with heart disease have to do with the arteries. Arteries are not the same with veins. They are muscular blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Arteriosclerosis or the hardening of the arteries is one of the complications of heart disease. The arteries become thick and no longer flexible that the blood could not flow smoothly.

Another problem is atherosclerosis. This occurs when there are plaque deposits caused by the buildup of cholesterol and far in the arteries. In turn, the arteries become narrow and the blood can not flow through. When the heart could not get enough blood to pump, a person is suffering from angina and could feel chest pain.

Two of the most deadly complication is heart attack and stroke. These two happens when the heart malfunctions. There is heart attack when a blood clots in the part of the heart. On the other hand, stroke happens when the brain is not able to get enough blood due to the clotting of blood or bursting of blood vessel.

Acquiring Heart Disease

Unlike diseases that are caused by virus or bacteria, heart disease is not contagious. Rather, there are risk factors that increase the chances of a person to acquire heart disease. One of these factors is old age. When people get older, the functioning of the heart could not be as healthy as it uses to be while we are young. The heart also deteriorates especially because of unhealthy lifestyle. As earlier said, heart disease is also hereditary. When you have family members who had the same problems, most likely you could also acquire the same.

However, some risk factors of heart disease are controllable. Among these factors are smoking, having high blood pressure, being overweight, and not exercising. These entire factors, if not monitored can contribute to having a heart disease.

Signs of Heart Disease

Heart disease s do not actually give visible symptoms or signs to people suffering it. Most of the time the disease is detected when the patient is already feeling chest pain or already had a heart attack of stroke.

To determine whether a person has a heart disease, one or a couple of the following procedure is initiated. Electrocardiogram records the electric activity of the heart. Through this test, the heart beating is determined when it is normal or not. Echocardiogram, on the other hand, uses sound waves that bounced off the parts of the heart. These waves create a picture of the heart, which is displayed in the monitor. With the stress test, some cables are connected to the body and to the electrocardiogram machine. The heart activity and how the muscles react while the patient exercise is being monitored. Catheterization locates the narrowed arteries through a long and thin tube that is inserted inside the body. This tube emits a special dye. Last is the carotid artery scan, which also uses sound waves to locate blockage in the carotid artery.

Spices add flavor and can make food more palatable. Even just adding plain salt and pepper makes our food better than it would be without them. Garlic adds another strong dimension to our food. Without spice, our food is unappetizing and without flavor. With spice, it can be a sensual delight.

As the world gets smaller, we get to try more cuisines. This introduces us to spices we may not have tried before. Today, it frequently happens that we have a dish from Mexico on Monday, from Italy on Tuesday, and China on Wednesday. After that, maybe you will eat something from India or Russia. Regional spices are becoming more common in the stores and as we taste these new combinations, we discover new favorites. Before we know it, we have added new spices to our cupboard.

The Care and Storage of Spices Makes a Difference

Can you remember the last time you bought spices? They do not have an indefinite shelf life. As time goes by, they lose color and flavor. To keep your spices as fresh as possible, store them someplace away from oxygen, heat, moisture, and bright light.

As convenient as it may be to keep them near your stove, try to keep them away from your kitchen appliances. Heat and steam can cause dampness, which will shorten their shelf life. Airtight containers made of glass or tin will help preserve the volatile oils in the spice, keeping their flavor intact.

Each spice can have a different shelf life. Check the ones in your cupboard periodically to check for freshness. Look at the color… is it faded? Is the scent still strong? Remember that whole spices will keep for a longer time span than those that are ground. It also depends on what part of the plant your spice is from.

For whole spices, remember that leaves and flowers may last up to a year. Roots, seeds, and barks can retain their goodness for over two years. Ground spices have a shorter life span. Leaves, seeds and barks will be good for about six months, while roots will remain fresh for up to a year.

Using Ethnic Spices to Bring the World Home

There are many ethnic recipes that require special spices to give them their unique flavor. For example, if you want to make chicken enchiladas, you may need cumin, chilies, cilantro, and garlic to create an authentic Mexican flavor.

If you decide to try an Afghani dish, you may need spices like savory, sumac, and sesame. For Indian food, you may need coriander, cumin, and turmeric. Japanese recipes may require furikake, chilies, ginger, and miso.

Exploring the world of spices can be fun and you may find new spices that you truly enjoy. Keep your mind and your mouth open for new tasty flavors. You may find that Greek cuisine is your cup of tea, while Afghani is not. You will never know unless you try. What makes this all possible is the availability of spices from all over the world today. It is commonplace these days to find many in your regular grocery store if not they are almost surely available at your local ethnic market.

Your family’s medical history can provide insight into the diseases and conditions that are common to you and your relatives. Use this history for clues about your risk for certain diseases and conditions. Family gatherings in Dallas, Houston or anywhere else in Texas can be fun and memorable. They are also an ideal time to catch up on family news and information, including your family’s health history. By mapping your family medical history, you can help identify some health risks you may face in the years ahead and plan for measures to minimize or eliminate those risks.

What is a family medical history?

A family medical history or medical family tree is a record of illnesses traced among family members. It looks like the family tree you might have drawn in school, with, of course, the addition of health information. This tree shows the relationships between each family member. And, depending on how much information you’re able to get for each relative, your medical family tree may end up being very detailed, while including health issues each family member faced.

What are the advantages of family medical history?

By compiling a family medical history, you can help your doctor spot patterns of specific conditions and diseases among family members. Your doctor and other healthcare professionals can use your family’s medical history – sometimes called a pedigree – for a number of things, including:

* Diagnosing a medical condition

* Determining whether you may benefit from preventive measures to lower your risk of a specific disease

* Deciding what medical tests to run

* Identifying other members of your family who are at risk of developing certain diseases

* Calculating your risk of certain diseases

* Calculating your risk of passing certain conditions on to your children

What can’t your family medical history tell you?

A family medical history doesn’t necessarily help everyone looking for answers about hereditary health concerns. For instance:

* If you’re adopted, family medical histories only work for blood relatives. And if you are adopted and don’t know your biological parents, your family’s medical history won’t tell you about your risk of inherited diseases.

* Don’t use it to predict your future. Whether you’ll actually end up with an inherited condition depends on your health habits, especially diet and exercise. Knowing now that you’re at risk of certain diseases can motivate you to change any unhealthy behaviors.

It provides limited insight into small families. If you have few siblings and cousins, it could be more difficult to identify family health patterns.

Someday it may be possible, and affordable, to use genetic testing to predict all of the diseases you’re at risk for. Until then, your family’s medical history is probably the best way to look into your possible future.

Gathering information about your family’s medical history.

Interview your relatives in person or on the phone. Or see if they are willing to take a few minutes at your next family reunion to answer your questions. Talking with your relatives can also help you renew or build relationships, as well as gain valuable medical knowledge.

Devise a questionnaire for your family. This should include questions about medical conditions your relatives have and their health habits, such as smoking, diet and exercise. Also include:

* Can you provide significant dates, including birth dates and other approximate dates when diseases/conditions were diagnosed?

* What major diseases has the family experienced? Examples: heart disease, stroke, cancer, depression, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, blindness and deafness. At what age were these diseases or conditions diagnosed? Was treatment successful?

* Any relatives have a tendency for other conditions: allergies, asthma, migraines or frequent colds?

* Have infertility, miscarriages, stillbirths or infant deaths taken place in the family? If so, what was the cause?

* Any history of birth defects, learning disabilities or mental retardation?

* What is the family’s dominant racial and ethnic background? Some diseases are more common among members of certain races and ethnicities.

* Is there any other information that may be relevant to the family medical history?

There are other sources of information you could include, such as death certificates, which are available through your state health department, and family records, which might include letters, census records or obituaries.

Try to gather as much information on as many generations of relatives as you can, including your parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, half brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, children and grandchildren. If you’re married and have children, include your spouse’s family history as well.

Make sure the information is as accurate as possible. If you don’t have information regarding what caused a family member’s death, don’t guess. Incorrect information will give you incorrect results. Do your best to collect solid information about your closest relatives, which would be your immediate family.

What can I do if a relative doesn’t want to share their medical information?

You might come across some relatives who prefer to keep their health information private. There may also be relatives who do not want to talk about an uncle’s alcoholism, a niece’s treatment for mental illness, a nephew’s dyslexia or a grandmother’s Alzheimer’s disease. Use tact and compassion to overcome this hurdle.

In addition, consider these strategies to get family members to open up and share personal information:

* Emphasize that your purpose is to create a record that will help you determine whether you and your relatives have a family history of certain diseases or health conditions. Make the completed medical history available to other family members so that they can also share the information with their doctors.

* Ask a question several different ways. Some people may be more willing to share health information in a face-to-face meeting. Others may prefer answering your questions by mail or e-mail.

* Word each question carefully. Don’t start with personal questions. Begin your interview by asking general questions about the whole family and then let your relative volunteer his or her personal health information.

* Be a good listener. As your relatives talk about their health problems, let them speak without interruption. Listen without judgment or comment.

* Respect privacy. As you collect information about your relatives, respect their right to confidentiality. Some people may not want to share any health information with you. Or they may not want this information revealed to anyone other than you and your doctor.

Now share your family medical history with your doctor.
